Fleetwood Mac, EP, Extended Play (2013)

Without You

“Without You” is Track 2 on Fleetwood Mac’s 2013 digital release Extended Play (EP). The song dates back to Stevie Nicks’ and Lindsey Buckingham’s time as the duo Buckingham Nicks. The long-forgotten track resurfaced after Stevie saw the bootlegged demo on YouTube.

About the Song

Lindsey Buckingham: It’s an old song from pre-Fleetwood Mac. It was written sometime after Buckingham Nicks came out but before we joined Fleetwood Mac. We were working on a second possible Buckingham Nicks album that never happened. (December 6, 2012)

Stevie Nicks: I think this song is a poem that I must have written when Lindsey and I were first going together. And it is such a beautiful poem, and it is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever written about he and I. Lindsey thinks I wrote it in 1974 after the Buckingham Nicks album got dropped by Polydor Records and we started Buckingham Nicks II. I, however, disagree. So we have a little agreement going, but the thing is this amazing song was lost since then until the summer of 2010 when I was in Hawaii and we, my friends who are on the computer, found it on — you guessed it — YouTube. Anyway, it was a beautiful time. And it was when we were really young and beautiful and in love. (April 8, 2013)

Lyrics

In my life
There’s been a few things
Worth singing about you
Well, I never even dreamed that I’d know you
Strange are the ways
Of a very complicated world
And there you are

Come to me now
And I’ll never know another
You are a song for me, a melody
Ingrained in my soul
Sing, sing your song
For my ears, they only hear you
If I never knew the likes of you
Where would I be
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you, yeah

If I’d not heard your laughter
Maybe I wouldn’t love you
If I’d not sung your music
I’d not come rolling after you
Oh, yeah

Cryin’ out loud
The time had come and gone without you
Inside me love to be written about you
Strange are the ways
Of a very complicated world
And there you are

Come to me now
And I’ll never know another
You are a song for me, a melody
Ingrained in my soul
Sing, sing your song
For my ears, they only hear you
If I never knew the likes of you
Where would I be
Without you
Without you
Without you, yeah
Without you, yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeah
Mm, mm, mm, mm, mm
Oh, yeah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Hey, yeah
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah
